Tips for Managing Your Oral Health During Summer Vacation

Summer is finally in full swing, and you’ve probably got a lot of fun plans that you’re preparing for. But whether you’re hitting the road for a trip to the beach or staying home for a classic “staycation,” you should want the peace of mind of knowing that your pearly whites are in tip-top shape. With that in mind, here are a few useful tips from your trusted dentist for protecting your oral health this summer vacation, no matter where you are or what you’re doing!

Tip #1. If You’re Traveling, Pack the Essentials

If you’re traveling this summer, packing a dental kit is a wise move. This doesn’t have to be anything expensive or sophisticated, but at least include a travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss, and if you have oral appliances like braces, dental wax, and over-the-counter pain relievers. Summer vacation does not mean taking a vacation from your hygiene routine!

Tip #2. Stay Hydrated

Summer often means warmer weather, meaning you should strive to stay hydrated throughout the day. But did you know that water also provides some pretty spectacular benefits for your teeth? It stimulates your mouth’s flow of saliva, which is your first line of defense against cavities. It also often has fluoride added to it (if you’re drinking tap water), which benefits your enamel. The next time you’re feeling hot under the summer sun, rather than grabbing a soda or lemonade, opt for ice-cold water instead—it’s also not nearly as sugary or acidic as other options.

Tip #3. See Your Dentist for a Checkup

Summertime falls right in the middle of the calendar year, making it the perfect time for you and your loved ones to visit the dentist for preventive care. This will ensure that your smile is in the absolute best shape imaginable heading into the summer, meaning you’re much less likely to endure a dental emergency that’ll ruin your plans. Not to mention, if you need your smile to look dazzling for a summer event like a wedding or graduation, your dentist can help you out with a variety of cosmetic services.
