You’re choosing a nearly invisible solution to move your teeth into their ideal positions without brackets and wires. Since the method used to align your teeth differs from metal braces, it’s normal to have a few questions about the road ahead. Here are 5 things you should know before getting Invisalign.

1. You’ll need to commit to your treatment plan.

You’ll wear the clear aligners over your teeth, so they apply continual pressure to fix your bite and alignment problems. Although the aligners are removable, you’ll need to wear them for at least 22 hours per day. You should only take them out when eating or drinking anything except water. You’ll also need to switch to the next aligner in your series on time, about every 1-2 weeks. While you won’t need appointments for adjustments, you’ll still need to see your dentist every few weeks, so they can monitor the movement of your teeth.

2. You’ll enjoy quicker results.

Traditionally, metal braces are needed for 18 to 24 months depending on a patient’s individual needs. Invisalign provides a quicker treatment time. Although every case is unique, most patients complete their series of aligners in 12 to 18 months. Generally, patients who need to make major adjustments will require more aligners, so they can expect their treatment to take longer than a person who only needs minor movements. It’s best to commit to your treatment plan to prevent any delays while on your journey to a straight smile.

3. There aren’t any dietary restrictions.

Since the aligners are removable, there aren’t any dietary restrictions. You can still enjoy many of your favorite foods, including popcorn. You’ll need to remove your aligners before eating or drinking and place them in your storage case to avoid misplacing them. Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth aligners with water before putting them back in your mouth.

4. You can smile confidently.

The plastic used to make the aligners is transparent. You’ll be able to see them while you’re holding them in your hand, but they will be nearly undetectable while in your mouth. Your dentist will recommend using nonabrasive dental products to avoid causing scratches on your aligners, which can make them look discolored.

5. You’ll benefit from lasting results.

After finishing your series of aligners, you’ll require a retainer to prevent your teeth from moving back into their previous positions. With the right aftercare, your smile will stay straight permanently.

Your dentist will explain what to know before getting Invisalign to ensure it’s the right treatment for you. The more you know, the better you will feel about the road ahead.
