Remember to Visit Your Family Dentist Before School Starts

smiling studentsPreparing to send the kids back to school can be a bit stressful and hectic, which is why you might want to get a head start on your checklist for this busy time of year. Between buying school supplies, shopping for new clothes, and making sure your kids get their annual sports physicals, please don’t forget to plan to visit your family dentist.

The Importance of Oral Hygiene

Most kids are active all summer long. Whether they’re running around the campground, splashing with their friends in the pool, or planning fun sleepovers for all their friends, they can get so caught up in all of their activities that they neglect their oral hygiene. They may therefore be at an increased risk of cavities and gum problems. A dental checkup before they head back to school can serve as the reminder they need to get back on track. The dentist or dental hygienist will give them personalized tips on how to keep their mouth clean and healthy, thus setting them up for a lifetime of healthy habits.

Of course, dental checkups do even more. These biannual appointments allow the dentist to check for developmental problems with the kids’ teeth and catch any other issues before they reach the point where major dental work becomes necessary.

Prepare Your Kids for School

Getting your kids’ teeth checked before school starts may allow you to make sure they get any needed work done without missing any time in the classroom. Plus, reminding them of the importance of oral hygiene will help them avoid the embarrassment of bad breath when they’re back with all their peers.

Another advantage to a summertime checkup is that it’s the ideal time for you to ask about a custom mouthguard for your child. They’re much more effective at protecting teeth than their store-bought counterparts. They’re essential for any young person who plays a sport where an impact to the mouth is likely to happen, such as football, basketball, or even soccer.

Make It a Family Affair

You want to set the best example possible for your kids, right? Scheduling your own dental appointment during the summer, when the kids are out of school, means you can bring your children with you to the office. When they observe your positive attitude about dentistry, they’ll be more likely to stay calm and optimistic during their own appointment. You can even ask your dentist’s receptionist about block scheduling so you and your kids can all get your teeth cared for on the same day — how convenient is that?

Is a visit to your family dentist on your back to school checklist? Please make sure it is!
